Food & Beverage Ingredients
IFC produces Solka-Floc®,and JustFiber®, brand powdered cellulose products. All are pure functional ingredients derived purely from plant sources. Cellulose is the building block of all plants, and is the most abundant source of complex carbohydrates in the world.
Solka-Floc® and JustFiber® are available in a variety of fiber lengths ranging from 15 to 300 microns. It provides many unique functions when used in food. Smaller particle sizes can contribute to a smoother consistency, mouthfeel, and cling in products such as sauces and salad dressings. Longer fiber lengths can serve as structural and textural components in breads and baked goods by providing strength and structure.
Powdered cellulose has the unique ability to bind liquid in food systems, up to 10 times its weight in water and up to 8 times its weight in fat. Because Solka-Floc® and JustFiber® are more hydrophilic than lipophilic, they demonstrate a higher degree of water binding capacity. The effect of numerous hydrogen bonds between the water molecules and cellulose fibers makes Solka-Floc® and JustFiber® extremely effective in reducing fat pickup during frying.
Used in a food formulation, Solka-Floc® can provide many unique functionalities. Solka-Floc® FCC grades meet the stringent purity requirements set forth by the Food Chemicals Codex making them ideal for food applications. Solka-Floc® cellulose is approved as a GRAS material by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration under the prior sanctioned category.
